Blue Demons and Scarlet Knights Play to a Scoreless Draw



PISCATAWAY, N.J. DePaul and Rutgers played to a 0-0 tie through 90 minutes of regulation and a pair of overtime periods on Saturday night at Yurcak Field. The draw was the third of the season for the Blue Demons as each of the previous two ties have also seen each side without a goal.

DePaul (3-4-3, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) finished the night with seven shots while the Scarlet Knights managed 19 attempts, but neither team found the back of the net. Blue Demon goalkeeper Brian Visser finished the 110 minutes with six saves and his counterpart, Amir Haghshenas, was credited with three stops.

The match featured a shot off the crossbar for each side with Rutgers hitting the frame in the 86th minute on a shot by Robert McLarney. In the first overtime period, Patrick Hopkins’ header for the game-winner off a DePaul corner kick hit the crossbar at 92:15.

Seven different players took a shot for the Blue Demons and Rutgers (4-3-3, 1-2-2 BIG EAST) saw McLarney, Dilly Duka and Kevin McFadden take a team-high four attempts apiece.

The Blue Demons return to Wish Field on Tuesday afternoon for a BIG EAST match against USF. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

Game Notes: The Blue Demons are now 4-0-3 in their last seven overtime games dating back to last season... the 0-0 score is the third scoreless draw this season... prior to this season, the last 0-0 tie was against Marshall in Sept. 2006... the shutout was the 23rd of Brian Visser’s career.
