Blue Demons to Battle Rutgers on Friday
Oct. 11, 2012
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – On Tuesday afternoon, the DePaul men’s soccer team came away with a draw. On Friday night, it hopes to come away with its first BIG EAST Conference win when the Blue Demons head to New Jersey to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Yurcak Field.
Tuesday’s matchup against visiting Valparaiso was a display of two strong defensive corps. The Crusaders, who had allowed just eight goals in their 10 matches prior, got on the board first against DePaul, but the Blue Demons answered moments later.
After freshman Michael Kozielek headed the ball toward the Valparaiso net, DePaul defender Jared Blincow was in the right spot for the rebound. With the ball at his feet, Blincow buried it past the Crusader keeper for the equalizer. The goal was also the first of the junior defender’s career. The two squads did not score for the remainder of the match and for the two overtimes thereafter.
On Friday, DePaul (3-8-2, 0-4 BIG EAST) returns to BIG EAST conference action at Rutgers (5-5-1, 1-2-1). Rutgers is coming off two straight matches against nationally-ranked opponents.
On Tuesday evening, the Scarlet Knights traveled to No. 1 Maryland for a nonconference bout with the Terps. Though Rutgers got on the board first, Maryland rebounded for two unanswered goals to remain undefeated on the year. Prior to Tuesday, Rutgers drew in a BIG EAST matchup with then-No. 17 USF.
Fans can follow along live on GameTracker during the match. The Blue Demons hold a 3-1-1 record over the teams’ last five meetings, though Rutgers picked up the win last season in Lincoln Park.
