CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s soccer team has an action-packed week where the Blue Demons will play two matches in five days. DePaul will take a break from BIG EAST matches on Tuesday as the Blue Demons renew their Red Line Rivalry with Loyola for the 37th time. On Saturday, the Royal Blue and Scarlet will return to Wish Field where head coach Craig Blazer and staff will honor its 2017 senior class on Senior Day against BIG EAST foe St. John’s.
DePaul’s 2017 senior class, consisting of Kosta Brkovic, Austin Harrell, Philipp Konigstein, Quentin Low, Caleb Pothast, Hans Wustling, and Stijn van der Slot, have made appearances in the BIG EAST tournament in back-to-back seasons and are making a push down the final stretch to make it three in a row.
The Blue Demons (4-8-1, 1-3-1 BIG EAST) are in search of their first win in the month of October after dropping their last three matches to Seton Hall, Northwestern, and No. 20 Butler. DePaul has been held scoreless in its last two matches and will look to leading scorers Konigstein and van der Slot to snap the streak against the Ramblers on Tuesday.
Loyola (5-5-2, 1-3-1 MVC) enters Tuesday’s meeting with the hopes of extending its three-match unbeaten streak where the Ramblers picked up back-to-back draws against UIC and Drake while defeating Evansville 3-0 in their last match on Oct. 14. To date, forward Elliot Collier has been the Ramblers’ offensive weapon, picking up 11 points on four goals while dishing out three assists. Kyle Thomson and Alec Lasinski have also been contributing forces for the Ramblers, netting three goals apiece.
The Ramblers lead the all-time series with DePaul 18-14-4. In the two squads’ last meeting, Loyola defeated the Blue Demons 2-0 on Oct. 4, 2016, at Wish Field.
Saturday will be a special day for the Blue Demons as DePaul will recognize the 2017 senior class with a pre-match ceremony starting at 12:45 p.m.
In their Senior Day contest, DePaul welcomes St. John’s to Wish Field. The Red Storm currently sits tied for third in the BIG EAST with a 2-2-1 record in conference play. While St. John’s has lost its last two matches in 1-0 results against Princeton and Marquette, the Red Storm has picked up two key conference wins in their five matches, upsetting No. 19 Xavier 3-0 while defeating Seton Hall 1-0 on Sept. 16.
St. John’s (5-6-2) has had six players score in 2017 where Alistair Johnston and Harry Cooksley lead the way with four and three goals, respectively. Johnston has nine points on season while Cooksley has collected eight, dishing out two assists to add to his three goals. In goal, Andrew Withers has been a mainstay for the Red Storm, recording five shutouts while making 48 saves. Through 13 matches, Withers has allowed just 10 goals to post a 0.74 goals against average.
Dating back to the first meeting in 2005, St. John’s leads the all-time series with DePaul 7-3-3, outscoring the Blue Demons 18-10. DePaul won the last meeting 1-0 on Oct. 29, 2016.
