Feltz Leads Blue Demons into Quarterfinals

CHICAGO Three first-half goals, including a pair of scores by Nathan Feltz, led DePaul to a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship. With the win, the Blue Demons advance to the quarterfinals and face the Blue Division’s No. 2 seed Connecticut on Saturday night in Storrs.

Feltz didn’t waste any time as he scored DePaul’s fastest goal of the season. John Kornfeld found Feltz on the run with a 40-yard serve from midfield to the right flank. Feltz ran down the ball near the endline and put a liner towards the far post. His shot from the tough angle tucked just inside the frame and the Blue Demons held a 1-0 advantage at 3:03.

DePaul put the game away later in the first period with a pair of goals in a six-minute span. The Blue Demons converted a textbook goal with Feltz starting the action on the right side of the 18-yard box. He fed Kornfeld near the top, who one-timed a bender to the back post where Mark Plotkin scored on a diving header at 31:46.

Feltz added the insurance goal at 37:26 after a shot by Erich Reichmann was blocked by the Pittsburgh defense. The ball went over to Feltz and he gathered it, shot it and scored.

Pittsburgh (7-8-3) scored early in the second half off the foot of Chris Wilcox. Goalkeeper Jordan Marks was credited with an assist after he punted the ball into DePaul’s penalty box where Wilcox took it and scored past a diving Brian Visser at 50:55.

The Panthers tried to add a second goal, but the DePaul defense didn’t bend and held them to just the one score. The Blue Demons totaled 18 shots to seven for Pittsburgh and the Panthers held a 4-1 edge on corner kicks. Visser finished the game with one save while two Pittsburgh goalkeepers combined for six stops.

DePaul (8-6-4) travels to Storrs, Conn., for a quarterfinal match against the Connecticut Huskies. Kickoff at Morrone Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The winner of that game advances to the BIG EAST Semifinals in Tampa, Fla.

Game Notes: DePaul’s three goals were a season high... it was the most goals scored in a game since a 4-3 overtime loss to Georgetown on Sept. 16, 2005... the two goals for Nathan Feltz were the second and third of his career... that game was also DePaul’s first BIG EAST match... the Blue Demons hold a 3-2-0 advantage in the series... DePaul has won the last three meetings between the two schools.
