Blue Demons Drop Season Finale


BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The men’s soccer team lost, 4-0, in their final match of the 2004 season at UAB on Saturday night.  The Blazers scored three first-half goals while outshooting the Blue Demons, 22-11.

Jason McLaughin scored the first of UAB’s three first-half goals at 3:29 for the eventual game-winner.  Lukasz Kwapisz and McLaughin teamed up on a give-and-go with McLaughin’s fourth goal of the season finishing the play.

Shane Elsner struck twice in a seven-minute span to put the game away before halftime.  Elsner scored his second and third goals of the season at 32:10 and 39:02 to give UAB (11-6-0, 7-2-0 C-USA) a commanding 3-0 lead at the intermission.

The Blazers added their fourth goal of the evening at 55:16 when Jerson Monteiro scored off a deflection past DePaul goalkeeper Lucas Zicher.  Michael Timlin started the match in goal for the Blue Demons with Zicher filling in for the second half.  The two keepers combined for 11 saves in the game.

DePaul (3-14-3, 1-7-1 C-USA) managed eight shots in the second half after totaling three in the first 45 minutes.  Saturday’s match marked the final game for DePaul as a member of Conference USA.  DePaul moves to the BIG EAST Conference beginning next season.
