Garza Selected BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Nov. 11, 2013
CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s soccer team certainly went out with a flourish.
Art Garza was honored on Monday as the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week after his goal and assist sparked the Blue Demons to a 2-1 upset last Friday over No. 10/19 Marquette.
The Golden Eagles had come to Wish Field leading the BIG EAST and wound up in a tie for first place after falling to Garza & Co.
The collective effort by the entire DePaul program enabled seniors Jared Blincow, Zach Forbes, Thiago Ganancio, Kyle Gustafson, Cale Hartle, Eric Sorby and Michael Stankiewicz to celebrate the culmination of their careers in Lincoln Park with a memorable victory.
Garza opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a well-timed header to the far post on a textbook cross from Blincow.
After Marquette found the equalizer in the 29th minute, Garza went back to work. This time, the talented junior midfielder sent a corner kick that Koray Yesilli connected on and sent into the far post for the game-winner.
The DePaul defense and freshman goalkeeper Quentin Low, making his first collegiate appearance, did the rest in neutralizing a talented Marquette attack.
Garza wound up leading the Blue Demons this season in goals with four, assists with three and points with 11. He had been a reliable defender earlier in his career, but played in the midfield and at forward this year.
Earlier in the season, Sorby had been honored as BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.
