DePaul's Band of Brothers Tops Purdue
Jan. 15, 2018

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – It must have been a fun drive home from Monday’s double dual at Purdue that started out well and finished up even better.

After opening the spring season with a 4-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky in the morning, the Blue Demons’ evening encore featured a stirring come-from-behind 4-2 triumph over host Purdue (1-1) which qualified for the NCAA tournament last year.

DePaul trailed 1-0 after dropping two of three doubles matches. It was 2-1 Boilermakers early in the singles round as Christopher Casati put his team on the board with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Renan Hanayama.

That’s when coach Matt Brothers and his players went on a decisive 3-0 run to put away an opponent that had beaten them 4-0 last season.

No wonder Brothers described his team’s performance at the Schwartz Tennis Center as a “huge win.”

Fran Tonejc ignited the turnaround edging Javier Rodriguez 7-5, 7-6. Tamas Zador gave DePaul its first lead at 3-2 with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Athell Bennett.

That left the clincher to freshman Luuk Wassenaar who came through with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 comeback win of his own to culminate the rally.

DePaul (2-0) will look to build on this early momentum when it hits the road for a Saturday match at Wisconsin.
