Blue Demons Sweep UIC
Jan. 15, 2011
CHICAGO - The DePaul men's tennis team won its second dual of the day on Saturday when it snuffed out the UIC Flames 7-0 at the Lakeshore Athletic Club. The dual was the second part of a doubleheader in which the Blue Demons topped Detroit-Mercy 7-0 earlier in the day.
The second dual mirrored the first as the Blue Demon dominated on all courts and won bragging rights between the two Chicago universities.
Playing his first match since joining the team in January, freshman Filip Dzanko teamed up with senior Ben Hartman to clinch the doubles point for the Blue Demons. Dzanko and Hartman overtook Gautham Oroskar and Alan Reifer 8-4 on the third court.
Like in the afternoon dual, DePaul's momentum carried over into singles action. Five of the six matches were complete in two sets, while Hartman needed a super break to claim his victory in the fifth position and perserve the dual sweep.
Dzanko got his first singles win and gave DePaul a 2-0 lead with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Nicolas Ospina in the fourth position.
Playing in the top spot, Sven Kasper overtook Raa 6-1, 6-4 while Chanturia clinched the Blue Demon victory with a 6-1, 7-5 win on the second court.
The Blue Demons return to action next week in Albuquerque, NM when they play at New Mexico and against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Blue Demons and Lobos tangle on Jan. 21 and play TAMCC on Saturday.
