CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 66 DePaul men’s tennis team went 1-1 on the first day of the Harvard Invitational on Friday at the Murr Center Tennis Courts.  The Blue Demons started the four-team invitational by playing No. 67 Drake and Denver.

The Blue Demons’ four-match winning streak came to an end after a hard-fought 4-2 loss to No. 67 Drake (1-0). DePaul started the day by winning the doubles point – claiming wins on the first and third courts.

George Chanturia and Filip Dzanko improved to 5-0 in duals with their dominating 8-3 victory over James McKie and Jean Erasmus in the No. 1 position.  Matija Palinic and Aaron Chaffee clinched the doubles point with their 8-6 win over Robin Goodman and Alen Salibasic.

Heading into singles, Dzanko claimed his second win of the day with his 6-1, 6-2 win over Jean Erasmus.  The win was the sophomore’s team-best 15th of the season. Up 2-0, the Blue Demons were unable to sustain their momentum and dropped matches on the first, third, fifth and sixth court.

DePaul (5-1) rebounded from its loss to Drake with a 4-1 victory over Denver.  Playing singles first, the Blue Demons claimed victory with four straight-set wins.

Denver (1-2) went up 1-0 with a win on the sixth court, but it was Dzanko who got DePaul going, overpowering Yannick Weihs 6-1, 6-3 in the top spot.  Chanturia improved to 15-2 and is 2-0 in the No. 2 position after his 6-4, 6-2 win over Jens Vorkefeld.

Mathias Hambach and Palinic rounded out DePaul’s wins on the fourth and fifth courts.  Hambach, topped Othar Kordsachia 6-3, 6-4 while Palinic won his match 6-2, 6-3 over Alex Clinkenbeard.

DePaul returns to the courts on Saturday and will play Harvard.
