CHICAGO – The DePaul men's tennis team continues to make noise this season as the Blue Demons topped No. 63 Iowa 5-2, on Saturday at the Lakeshore Athletic Club. The win is the team's third straight while DePaul improves to 5-1 while the Hawkeyes fall to 1-1.
The Blue Demons set the tone of the match winning the doubles point. After Iowa won on the third court, DePaul’s Matija Palinic and George Chanturia teamed-up for an 8-6 win over Will Vasos and Austen Kauss on the second court to even the doubles score.
With the doubles point on the line, Bartosz Jozwiak and Sven Kasper went at Mitch Bruche and Jonas Diercxx with everything in their arsenal. The Blue Demon pair gave DePaul a 1-0 advantage with a hard-fought 8-4 win. The duo improves to 14-5 on the season and is 4-2 in the top doubles spot.
Iowa quickly evened the score with a win on the second court before Kasper put DePaul back on top with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Bruche in the number one position. The sophomore improves to 5-1 in the top spot and registered his tenth singles win of the season.
Jozwiak got the Blue Demons within one point of the dual victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Kauss in the fourth position. The senior has won his last three matches and improves to a team-best 12-6 mark in singles play.
Following Jozwiak's lead, fellow senior Ben Hartman sealed DePaul’s victory on the sixth court with a straight-set win over Beckert.
Chanturia recorded DePaul’s final point of the dual with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory over Zotov.
The win over the Hawkeyes is DePaul’s first ranked win since the 2009 season when the Blue Demons topped No. 23 Louisville in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship.
DePaul goes for two-straight ranked wins on Sunday when it host No. 73 Princeton at the Glenbrook Racquet Club. Tomorrow’s match is set to begin at 9 a.m.
