Blue Demons Send Hambach Out A Winner on Senior Day
April 6, 2013
CHICAGO -DePaul men's tennis made sure it was a memorable Senior Day for Mathias Hambach, sweeping singles play en route to a 6-1 win over visiting IUPUI on Saturday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
With the win, the Blue Demons improved to 4-1 at home and 5-15 overall. The Jaguars dropped to 4-16 with the setback.
IUPUI secured the doubles point in the early goings of the match, but DePaul responded after a mid-match ceremony for Hambach with a dominant effort in the solo round.
Honored in-between doubles and singles play for his four years with the team, Hambach came out of the intermission on a mission and took care of his opponent, Jake Hedderig, in quick fashion, 6-3, 6-1, to pick up his 10th win of the season.
At the top spot, junior Filip Dzanko won for the sixth time in his past seven outings with a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Jason Jaruvang.
The Blue Demons continued to roll at the three and four spots, where freshmen Sten Leusink and Jan-Willem Feilzer both earned straight set victories. Leusink, playing at the three, put away Nick Volz 6-4, 6-4 and Feilzer followed at the four spot with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Armaan Choudhary.
Another pair of freshmen, Kyle Johnson and Paul John, closed out the scoring for DePaul with a pair of wins at the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Johnson made quick work of IUPUI's Deon Shafer in the five hole, 6-1, 6-2, while John posted a similar 6-2, 6-2 result at the six against Louis Sacks.
The Blue Demons will play next at BIG EAST rival Marquette on Friday, April 12 to close out the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT.
