Payback is Sweet for Men's Tennis
April 15, 2018

CHICAGO – The momentum from a walk-off win less than 24 hours earlier carried over for DePaul men’s tennis on Sunday.

Behind a strong doubles performance and three clutch singles wins, the Blue Demons eased past New Mexico State 4-1 at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.

On Saturday night at the same tennis complex, Christopher Casati’s last-match, final-set success had propelled his team to a 4-3 BIG EAST victory over Butler.

Sunday’s success came against the same New Mexico State team that had beaten DePaul 4-2 six weeks ago at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The rematch saw DePaul (14-9) again claim the doubles point thanks to wins by Tamas  Zador/Fran Tonejc and Alex Galoustian/Boris Spanjaard.

It was 2-0, good guys after Zador took down Enrique Asmar 6-3, 6-3. Saturday night’s hero Casati put his team on the brink of victory with a 7-5, 7-6 (1) win over Sergi Espias.

New Mexico State (13-8, 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference) salvaged a point at No. 2 singles, but Tripp Tuff closed it out with his 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 triumph over the Aggies’ Marui Benitez.

Coach Matt Brothers and his Blue Demons go for three in a row as they conclude their BIG EAST and dual-match season with a 3:15 p.m. Saturday showdown against longtime rival Marquette at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
