SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 60 DePaul men’s tennis team will play for fifth place at the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday after sweeping Connecticut 4-0 on Saturday at Leeper Park in downtown South Bend. The Blue Demons sqaure off against rival Marquette on Sunday at 8 a.m (CT) at Leeper Park's South Courts

The Blue Demons (17-9) won the doubles point behind strong performances by their first and third squads.  After Connecticut (8-9) won on the second court, DePaul’s No. 1 pair of Bartosz Jozwiak and Sven Kasper overpowered Andrew Marcus and Scott Warden 8-2 to even the slate at one.

Mathias Hambach and Filip Dzanko secured DePaul’s 1-0 advantage with a hard-fought 9-8 (4) win over Ricardo Cardona and Wei Lin on the third court.

The Blue Demons needed just three singles wins to secure their 17th win of the season and they got just that – wins on the sixth, second and fourth courts.

Hambach was the first to finish and topped Lin 6-2, 6-2 for the sophomores’ ninth win of the season.

George Chanturia won his second BIG EAST Championship match with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 performance on the second court.  Chanturia improves to 23-11 and is 10-2 in the second position.

Dzanko also won his second match of the Championship, but this one clinched DePaul’s win.  Dzanko topped Dave Adam 7-5, 6-0 on the fourth court.

DePaul plays Marquette for fifth place on Sunday.  The Blue Demons won the team’s regular season meeting 4-3 in Milwaukee on April 16 and stretched its series winning streak to five games.
