COLUMBUS, Ohio -- DePaul men’s tennis upperclassmen – Filip Dzanko, George Chanturia and Sven Kasper all won their opening round singles match at the ITA Midwest Regional on Friday at Ohio State’s Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Tennis Center.
Dzanko and Chanturia won their matches in three sets while Kasper dominated his opponent, winnings – 6-2, 6-2.
Dzanko started DePaul’s day by defeating Logon Collins from Marquette. The Blue Demon sophomore won the first set 7-6, but dropped the second set 6-3. Not wanting to make an early exit in the Regional, Dzanko dug deep and dominated the final set, topping his BIG EAST rival 6-0 to move into the second round.
Chanturia’s match was highlighted with long rallies as all three sets we close. After dropping the first set 7-6, the DePaul senior took the final two set 6-4, 7-6.
Kasper rounded out DePaul’s singles with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Northwestern’s Tobias Reitz.
With the first round of singles complete, the tournament moved into doubles action. Mathias Hambach and Aaron Chaffee recorded the Blue Demons only doubles win when the duo topped Cleveland State’s Yannick Goossens and Ali Shabib 8-6.
Chanturia and Dzanko were on the other end of an 8-6 score, falling to Michigan State’s Christian Roehmer and Doug Zade. Adam Reinhart and Sven Kasper dropped their respective match 8-5 to a pair from Michigan.
The ITA Midwest Regional continues on Saturday with two rounds of singles and doubles. Play begins at 8 a.m. (EST).
