Leusink Sets Pace for Blue Demons on Day One in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Thursday marked the first day of the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Four Blue Demons hit the courts today, all of them competing in the singles qualifier draw. The quarterfinalists of the qualifier draw will earn a spot in the main draw, which begins Saturday.

Sten Leusink paced DePaul today, emerging as the lone Blue Demon to reach the Round of 16 and moving within one victory of the main draw.

Leusink, the draw's No. seed, knocked off Western Michigan's Pablo Mora, 6-1, 6-4, before advancing to Friday's third round with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Northern Illinois' Carlos Manzanas. He will face Alberto Zanotti of Northwestern tomorrow.

Paul John and Tim Corwin each won their first round matches today but both fell in the Round of 32. John defeated Green Bay's Joey Leto in a three-set match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and Corwin knocked off Jorg Van Der Vloet (Cleveland State), 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. Adam Reinhart lost his first round match to Rowan Isaak's of Green Bay, 6-1, 6-2.

Tomorrow, Leusink will play for a spot in the main singles draw. In addition, the main doubles draw, which features three Blue Demon pairs, begins tomorrow.
