Spanjaard Advances at ITA Midwest Regional

Singles Qualifying

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Boris Spanjaard got off to a fast start Thursday in the first two qualifying rounds of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.

The Blue Demon sophomore opened up the 21-team tournament with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Nick Schobel of Western Michigan. He followed up with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision over Louis-Phillippe Hamel of Northern Illinois.

Spanjaard can qualify for Saturday's main draw with a win on Friday against Michigan State's Michael Dube. The third round of qualifying singles begins at 7 a.m.

Teammate Fran Tonejc won his opening match 6-4, 6-1 over Franklin Brozovich of Valparaiso. In the second round, Tonejc lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to MSU's Alex Kim.

Chris Casati dropped his opener 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Ben Slade of Cleveland State while Luuk Wassenaar fell 6-3, 6-3 to Will Howells of Notre Dame.

In consolation matches, Casati topped Victor Spolidorio of Northern Illinois 6-4, 6-4 while Wassenaar won 7-6(6), 6-2 over Vince Anzalone of Toledo

DePaul's doubles teams of Spanjaard and Wassenaar, Alex Galoustian and Conor O'Meara plus Casati and Tonejc compete in the doubles main draw Friday beginning at 9 a.m.
