KALAMAZOO, Mich. – DePaul men’s tennis coach Matt Brothers wanted yesterday’s success in doubles to carry over to singles play on Saturday and did it ever -- as Ben Hartman and Mathias Hambach will each play for the Championship of their respective flights at the Jack Vredevelt Invitational.
Playing at Western Michigan’s, West Hills Athletic Club on Saturday, the Blue Demons tallied six victories while Hartman will play for the B Flight championship and Hambach competes for the C Flight title on Sunday.
Hartman faces Western Michigan’s Michael Calderone on Sunday. The Blue Demon senior reached the finals after his initial opponent, Simon Blomberg from Western Michigan withdrew from the tournament before Hartman topped Illinois State’s Matej Zlatkovic, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Hambach followed the same pattern as Hartman as his first opponent, Skip Span from Illinois State retired in the first set with Hambach leading 5-1. Hambach, who entered the weekend with a 2-2 record in singles play, battled with Cleveland State’s Chris Klepatz for the right to advance to the Championship. Hambach dropped the first set 7-5, but rallied in the final two sets (7-5, 7-6 (5)) to claim victory.
Hambach is scheduled to play ISU’s Filip Miljevic for the C Flight title on Sunday.
Bartosz Jozwiak and Matija Palinic will both play for third place in their respective flights after each won their opening round match, but dropped their second match.
The Vredevelt Invitational as well as the Blue Demons Fall schedule concludes on Sunday with one round of singles.
