Men's Tennis Earns First Dual Victory of the Season



MUNCIE, Ind.- The DePaul men’s tennis team picked up its first dual victory of the season on Sunday, defeating Ball State 4-3 at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  The Blue Demons earned the doubles point and won three singles matches to edge the Cardinals.

 

Doubles action saw DePaul bounce back after Austin Doerner and Jose Moncada fell 8-3 to Joe Epkey and Jarrod Epkey at No. 1.  George Wang and Alasdair Graetz rolled past Aaron Phillips and Jorge Rodriguez 8-4 at No. 2 before Danny Wilson and Vanja Grgec edged Joe Vallee and Jimmy Brannon 9-8 (4) at No. 3.

 

The Blue Demons topped the Cardinals in singles competition by taking three consecutive matches after Ball State won the first two.  Moncada opened DePaul’s winning surge with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Jarrod Epkey at No. 3.  Grgec followed at No. 4, defeating Tetta Oyama 7-5, 6-4.  Graetz delivered the final blow to Ball State, edging Bret Berryman 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.

 

DePaul (1-1) hosts its home opener this Friday as cross-town rival UIC visits the Lakeshore Athletic Club.  The dual match begins at 6 p.m.
