Blue Demons Ride Past No. 43 Mustangs, 5-2
DALLAS The undefeated DePaul men’s tennis team improve to 5-0 after a dominating win over No. 43-ranked Southern Methodist University, 5-2. This marks the first time in over 15 years the Blue Demons have started out their season with five straight victories.
The doubles pairs quickly clinched the point, taking all three matches. No. 1 doubles tandem Austin Doerner and Ben Hartman earned their third victory as a pair after beating Robin Fahgen and Chris Hooshyar, 8-5. Alasdair Graetz and Bartosz Jozwiak also notched their third win of the dual season, while midseason transfer Matija Palinic and senior Jose Moncada won their second.
Palinic struck first in singles action, defeating Gaston Guadrant by a score of 6-1, 6-4. Moncada raised DePaul’s lead to three after beating Hooshyar in straight sets.
SMU made a 2-0 run after losses from Doerner and Graetz, making the overall score 3-2, but Hartman clinched the fourth and deciding point with a win over David Costa, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.
Jozwiak furthered the margin of victory after defeating Griffen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
The Mustangs now fall to 0-2 after loosing a hard-fought match against No. 7-ranked Baylor earlier this weekend.
The Blue Demons return to action next weekend when they travel to Minnesota to face the Golden Gophers on Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. (CST)
