No. 50 Blue Demons Gear Up for the HEB Tournament of Champions
CHICAGO The No. 50 DePaul men’s tennis team travels to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in the HEB Tournament of Champions Team Tennis Classic on March 13-14. The Blue Demons face their toughest opponents to date, as seven of the eight teams are currently ranked in the ITA Top 75, including No. 33 New Mexico, No. 35 Texas Tech, No. 53 Middle Tennessee State, No. 65 Brigham Young and No. 73 Western Michigan. DePaul kicks off the tournament at 9 a.m. (CST) against South Alabama. The Blue Demons enter this weekend with a 10-2 record and on March 3, 2009, they re-entered the rankings at No. 50 marking a new season-high. Austin Doerner and Ben Hartman moved up to No. 38 as a doubles team, after going 2-0 against pairs from Drake and Iowa. The duo leads the squad with an 11-1 record. Jose Moncada won a pair of singles matches last weekend to improve his dual season record to 9-1. The senior, who trades No. 1 match duties with Doerner, has just one loss in the top match while remaining undefeated in the No. 2 singles slot. Although South Alabama has fallen out of the Top 75, the Jaguars boast two student-athletes who are currently recognized on the polls. Sergio Ramierez is the No. 47-ranked singles player in the country, and is 8-0 in dual play. Ramierez has teamed up with Leo Dominguez to post an 8-1 record. The duo sits at No. 73 on the doubles polls. Following the match up with South Alabama, the Blue Demons face either No. 35 Texas Tech, or No. 65 BYU at 4 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for noon on Saturday at the HEB Tennis Center.
