Blue Demons End Their Home Schedule with Two Wins

CHICAGO The DePaul men’s tennis team added two more wins to their season total after shutting out both Toledo and Lewis, 7-0.  Seniors Austin Doerner and Jose Moncada concluded their last matches at the Lakeshore Athletic Club with four wins each.

In the first dual against the Rockets, the Blue Demons took the doubles point after three close matches.  Vanja Grgec and Bartosz Jozwiak narrowly fell to Sven Burus and Robbie McCallum, 8-6, but the No. 38 double tandem of Doerner and Ben Hartman answered with their 8-6 win over Jared Miller and Nutthavit Likitkumchorn.

To earn the doubles point, Moncada and Alasdair Graetz fought back from a 7-5 deficit to beat the No. 73 ranked doubles pair of Levi Bent-Lee and Aleksandar Elezovic, 9-7.

Grgec was the first finish in singles action, beating Bent-Lee 6-1, 6-3.  Doerner put DePaul up 3-0 after his triumph over Jared Miller.  Graetz clinched the Blue Demon’s 11th season-win with his two-set win over Elezovic.

Moncada, Hartman, and Jozwiak all dropped their first set to fall behind early, but climbed back to win the second.  Jozwiak, having started his third set after the team win was already decided, went to a super tiebreaker format and won 10-3.  Moncada and Hartman won their third sets, 6-3 and 6-2, respectively.

In the second dual of the night against Lewis, DePaul jumped out to a quick lead after all three doubles pairs won.  The seniors, Doerner and Moncada, teamed up for the first time this season and earned an 8-1 win over Uno Lapimaa and Tonis Irdoja.  Hartman and Jozwiak didn’t give up a single game in their triumph over Bret Mega and Balazs Somogyi, and Tim Cadet and Juan Munoz earned their fourth win as a pair.

Doerner ended his last home match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lapimaa and Moncada finished with a 6-3, 6-1 win versus Irdoja.  Graetz, Grgec, Cadet, and Munoz all earned straight-set victories to solidify the shutout.

The Blue Demons improved to 12-5 after the pair of wins today and lengthened their home winning streak to 20 matches dating back to the 2005-06 season.  The team heads to San Antonio, Texas for spring break, where they’ll face Southeast Louisiana, TAMU-Corpus Christi, UT-San Antonio.  The first match is scheduled for March 22.
