Men's Tennis Remains Perfect in Georgia

Will and George Wang pace Blue Demons to victory in Atlanta.

ATLANTA -- Three years ago, the nationally ranked Panthers of Georgia State upended DePaul, 5-2. That was then and this is now, as the DePaul Blue Demons men’s tennis pushed their winning steak to 5 matches, defeating Georgia State, 4-3, in a battle at the Bitsy Grant tennis center in Atlanta, Georgia.

In doubles, the Wang brothers came back from being down 4-1 at #3 to beat the Georgia State tandem of Clarence Boyd and Matija Sulin, 9-8 (2). At the #2 slot, Robert Kotroczo and Eric Huffman came back from a break to upend the team of Albano Franco and Nicolas Lupica, 8-6. Juniors Sam Davidson and Mark Henderson sealed the deal with an 8-6 victory at #1.

“The Wangs showed heart by battling and fighting as did everyone,” said men’s tennis coach Luke Taylor, “This is the best doubles I have ever seen from this team.”

The Blue Demons kept the intense and carried it over to singles. Davidson was first off the court winning 6-3, 6-4, against Matija Sulin at #4 singles. At No. 2, Henderson followed Davidson’s lead, thumping Albano Franco, 6-3, 6-2. It was then freshman sensations George Wang’s time to shine, as he pulled off the victory in three sets, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, giving the Blue Demons a 4-3 win.

“Georgia State has played in the NCAA Tournament four out of the last five years,” said Taylor. “This was an unbelievable win for the program and I am so proud of our guys.”

DePaul now stands at 9-10 and will return to action at Eastern Illinois on April 3rd.
