The DePaul Men's Tennis Team concluded its spring trip on Monday, finishing 2-3 during its tour of Florida. The Demons competed against Conference USA rival South Florida as well as the University of Central Florida, Stetson, Florida A&M and Florida Atlantic.
DePaul's first match was Wednesday, March 28 against South Florida. USF proved they are the favorites for the conference title by soundly defeating the Demons without dropping a set, 7-0. The highlight of the match was Robert Kurek's and Maciek Jozwiak's win at the #1 doubles flight against Antelo/Kleiman.
DePaul came through with its first win of the trip the next day against Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, stopping the Hatters' 17-match winning streak by winning 5-2. Four of the six singles matches went three sets as the schools split those matches. However, DePaul won the two remaining singles spots and the doubles point to claim the victory. Jevgenji Cariov, Andy Michael and Jozwiak all won their singles and doubles matches on the day.
Against defending MEAC champion Florida A&M in brutal wind, the Demons grinded their way to a 5-2 victory. Andy Michael won his third straight match at no. 6 and the Demons also got victories from Dan Bennett, Cariov and Kurek to go along with the doubles point.
The Demons played their fourth match in as many days against Florida Atlantic on April 2 in Miami and it showed as the Demons lost 4-0. FAU came out very strong in the doubles, posting a shutout at #2 and a victory at #3. Jozwiak and Kurek posted another solid victory at #1, defeating their opponents 8-4. However, in singles FAU swept spots 4-6 for the 4-0 victory.
"It was a disappointing way to end our spring trip, but fatigue caught up with us, and to play outdoors in the heat you have to be fresh," said junior Dan Bennett. "It just proved to be too much tennis."
DePaul plays its first conference home match on Thursday, April 5 against Marquette. Match time is 1 p.m. at the Lakeshore Athletic Club. The Demons also host a doubleheader on Saturday against Saint Louis and Hawaii. Their match record on the season now stands at 8-9.
