Men's Tennis Enters BIG EAST Championships as No. 5 Seed
PROVIDENCE, R.I. The DePaul men’s tennis team earned the No. 5 seed in the 2008 BIG EAST Conference Championships it was announced on Monday. The Blue Demons face No. 4 seeded Marquette on Friday in an 11 a.m. (CST) dual at the USF Courts in Tampa, Florida.
Friday’s winner advances to Saturday’s semifinals to face the winner of the top dual that features defending champion Notre Dame and the winner of a play-in match between Villanova and Connecticut. The tournament championship will be played on Sunday at 8 a.m. (CST).
The Blue Demons posted an overall record of 13-9 during the 2008 dual season with a 2-1 performance against BIG EAST opponents. DePaul recorded a 6-1 victory over Georgetown on February 9 and a 7-0 shutout over Connecticut on March 1. The Blue Demons suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to Marquette on April 5.
The tournament bracket boasts three teams currently in the ITA rankings. No. 33 Notre Dame enters the tournament as the top seed, while No. 38 Louisville holds the No. 2 seed and No. 40 USF enters as the No. 3 seed.
Georgetown follows DePaul with the No. 6 seed and St. John’s carries the No. 7 seed. Thursday pits No. 8 seed Villanova against No. 9 seed Connecticut in the play-in match.
The 2007 BIG EAST Championships saw DePaul suffer a 4-3 loss to St. John’s in the first round. The Blue Demons posted a 4-0 victory over Villanova in consolation play before closing the weekend with a 4-3 loss to Marquette.
Through 22 spring duals, junior Jose Moncada carries a singles record of 13-6 with a 6-1 performance in the No. 1 match. Sophomore Alasdair Graetz boasts 11 singles victories and freshman Ben Hartman holds a spring record of 16-2.
DePaul tunes up for the BIG EAST Championships on Wednesday with a non-conference dual at Florida Gulf Coast. The Blue Demons challenge the Eagles (10-9) at noon (CST) in Fort Myers, Florida.
