Blue Demons Soar Above Eagles, 7-0
Fort Myers, Fla. The DePaul men’s tennis team ended its regular season with a 7-0 shutout over Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles fall to 5-15, while the Blue Demons enter the BIG EAST Conference Championships with a 15-9 record.
DePaul jumped to a quick 1-0 lead, winning all three doubles matches. Ben Hartman and Austin Doerner defeated Brenton Bacon and Thibaud Aime, 8-3, while Jose Moncada and Alasdair Graetz earned an 8-4 decision over Edson Lima and Rafael Costa. Bartosz Jozwiak and Matija Palinic wrapped up Blue Demons’ undefeated doubles play after beating Ervin Garibovic and Brad Henderson, 8-4.
In singles action Ben Hartman led the team, giving up just three games in his win over Costa. Palinic added a 6-3, 6-2 win against Henderson.
In the No. 3 singles match, Graetz won the first set in a tiebreaker, but put the second set away versus Lima, 6-4. After splitting the first two sets, Doerner went to a super-tiebreaker third set with Aime. Doerner won the tiebreaker, 10-7, and effectively the entire match.
Moncada was up 6-5 in his first set against Garibovic when the Eagle’s No. 2 singles player was forced to retire. Grgec won in the No. 6 position by default.
DePaul returns to action on Fri., April 17 when they face Marquette on the Varsity Courts of USF at 11 a.m. The Blue Demons enter as the No. 5 seed, while the Golden Eagles ring in at No. 4.
