April 18, 2018

CHICAGO – A weekend sweep of BIG EAST Conference adversary Butler followed by New Mexico State brought recognition to the DePaul men’s tennis program on Wednesday.

Christopher Casati was honored as the BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week after winning a pair of singles matches and one doubles match.

This is the first BIG EAST weekly accolade for the sophomore from Deerfield.

He sparked the Blue Demons to a 2-0 week with a 4-3 decision over Butler and a 4-1 victory over a New Mexico State team that had topped DePaul 4-2 last month at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The pressure was on Casati during the Butler showdown last Friday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness. It was tied 3-3 when Casati won his No. 4 singles match 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 over Spencer Lang for a walk-off win.

Casati also teamed with Luuk Wassenaar for a 6-4 doubles victory over the Bulldogs’ No. 2 doubles team.

In the 4-1 triumph over New Mexico State, Casati won his match at No. 3 singles 7-5, 7-6 (1) over Sergi Espias. New Mexico State is 13-8 and seeded second in the WAC tournament.

Casati has compiled a 10-7 singles record in the dual-match season and is 15-12 overall.

DePaul (14-9, 2-1) closes out its regular season and BIG EAST schedule with a 3:15 p.m. match Saturday against rival Marquette (11-8, 3-1) at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
