Men's Tennis Earns No. 3 Seed in 2014 BIG EAST Tournament
April 22, 2014
NEW YORK – The DePaul men’s tennis team will be the No. 3 seed in the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament, the conference announced on Monday evening.
DePaul went 9-13 overall during the regular season and 2-2 against BIG EAST opponents. The Blue Demons will square off against No. 6 seed Georgetown on Friday (April 25) at 2 p.m. CST.
Although DePaul played four matches against BIG EAST foes this year, it did not face the Hoyas, who finished 8-12 and 1-1 against BIG EAST teams. DePaul’s two wins came against Xavier and Butler, while its two losses were 4-3 defeats against the tournament’s top two seeds, St. John’s and Marquette.
The Blue Demons and Hoyas haven’t met since the 2008 campaign. That 2008 match, which was played on Feb. 9 in Chicago, was won by DePaul, 6-1. Prior to that, DePaul and Georgetown hadn’t met since the 2006 postseason, when the Blue Demons knocked off the Hoyas, 4-2, in the BIG EAST Tournament’s seventh place match.
The 2014 BIG EAST Tournament will feature eight teams and will be played at the U.S. Open in Flushing, Queens (N.Y.). The tournament’s top seed is St. John’s, which will face No. 8 seed Villanova in Friday’s quarterfinals. The winner of that match will meet the winner of the tournament’s 4/5 match, which features Xavier (No. 4) and Butler (No. 5).
In the bottom half of the bracket, the winner of the match between the Hoyas and Blue Demons will face either No. 2 Marquette or No. 7 Creighton in Saturday’s semifinals.
Both of Saturday’s (April 26) semifinal matches will be played at 10 a.m. (CST) and Sunday’s (April 27) final is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CST).
