Vanja Grgec Earns All-BIG EAST Honors



CHICAGO - DePaul men's tennis student-athlete Vanja Grgec was named to the BIG EAST All-Conference team it was announced today by the league office.  The Blue Demon senior becomes the fourth men's tennis student-athlete to earn all-conference honors since 2005.

Grgec posted a 19-12 record in singles play including a 6-4 mark in the number five position and a 3-1 record in the sixth spot.  The Blue Demon senior closed out his career by winning four of his last five singles matching including a pair of wins over Marquette's Jacob Straus in DePaul's last two matches of the season. With his impressive singles' record in tow, Grgec registered a perfect 3-0 mark over league opponents this season.

Grgec helped DePaul to a third place BIG EAST Championship finish in 2010 while the senior finished his career at DePaul with 69-49 singles record and a 54-46 mark in doubles play. 

Louisville's Austin Child was the unanimous pick for the BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Year after winning the league's Player of the Week honors six times this season . Ranked 19th in the ITA singles ratings, Child is the highest ranked men's player in the conference. He tallied a 20-4 record in dual match play, including 12 wins over ranked opponents. Each of his four losses came to opponents ranked in the top 23, including two in the top 10. Childs also is 36th in the ITA doubles rankings, alongside partner Simon Childs.

Louisville, the 2010 BIG EAST men's champion, was strongly represented in the annual awards as three Cardinal players were unanimous All-BIG EAST selections and head coach Rex Ecarma was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year. Austen Childs, Viktor Maksimcuk and Simon Childs were unanimous selections to the All-BIG EAST team while Robert Hall also was named to the squad.
 
Marquette's Dusan Medan, Notre Dame's Daniel Stahl and USF's Wael Kilani were also unanimous All-BIG EAST selections. The BIG EAST Championship runners-up Irish also had Casey Watt and Stephen Havens recognized on the All-BIG EAST team.
