Men's Tennis: BIG EAST Honors Three Blue Demons

May 8, 2014

NEW YORK – DePaul senior Filip Dzanko has been named the BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and Sten Leusink and David Vieyra have been named to the All-BIG EAST team, the conference announced Thursday afternoon.

The announcement comes 11 days after the Blue Demons finished their season with a second place finish in the BIG EAST Tournament at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens (N.Y.).

For Dzanko, this is his third consecutive appearance on the All-BIG EAST list. He also picked up the award as a sophomore in 2012 and again as a junior in 2013. This season, Dzanko played 22 dual matches, all coming in the No. 1 position. He finished 16-6 in those 22 matches and went 26-10 overall dating back to the fall. In doubles play, he teamed primarily with Vieyra; the DePaul duo went 24-9 overall and 13-6 in dual play. All of the dual matches were played in the No. 1 position. Dzanko was a unanimous selection to this year’s All-Conference squad.

"Filip’s game took a big jump in the second half of the season and he really did a great job of leading and inspiring the guys on the court," head coach Matt Brothers said. "Winning the BIG EAST Player of the Year Award is a tremendous honor for Filip and our program. We couldn’t be more proud of him and all that he has accomplished this year and in his career at DePaul."

Leusink was also a unanimous pick after posting a 12-8 dual singles mark during the 2014 season. He went 8-4 at No. 2 singles and 4-4 at No. 3 singles while collecting nine dual doubles wins during his sophomore campaign. In the BIG EAST Tournament, Leusink went 2-1 in singles matches, playing all three in the No. 2 position.

Finally, Vieyra was selected to the All-BIG EAST in his first season as a Blue Demon. Vieyra, a junior who played his first two years at the University of Alabama, put together an eight-win singles campaign in dual play, going 8-3 in the No. 3 slot. He and Dzanko went 13-6 in No. 1 dual doubles matches as well. In the BIG EAST Tournament, Vieyra recorded DePaul’s only point of the championship match when he defeated Lucas Hejhal of St. John’s, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 3 position.

The 2014 Blue Demons earned the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, their highest seed in the conference tournament in school history. They advanced to the championship match by defeating Georgetown in the quarterfinals and Marquette in the semifinals.
