May 18, 2012
CHICAGO, Ill. – Men’s tennis standout George Chanturia picked up another postseason honor on Friday as the senior from Tbilisi, Georgia, was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members.
Chanturia, who holds a 3.91 grade-point average as an accounting major, was the lone representative of the BIG EAST Conference on the District 5 team which includes universities in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
Chanturia, who was named to his second-straight All-BIG EAST roster in late April, earned a spot on the All-District squad after performing well inside the classroom and on the court. Chanturia finished the 2012 season with a 24-12 overall singles record this season, including a 5-1 mark in his time in the top singles position. In tournament play, Chanturia went 10-2 in singles action including a win in the Purdue Fall Invitational A Singles Flight.
With the selection, Chanturia is now eligible for Academic All-America Honors to be announced later this month. In order to be eligible for Academic All-District and Academic All-America recognition, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, maintain a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA and is a starter or key reserve on his or her team. The men's at-large category includes student-athletes that participate in fencing, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Last season, Chanturia got the nod as an ITA Scholar-Athlete while earning a spot on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Chanturia also has frequented the Athletic Directors honor roll during his time at DePaul after transferring in 2010 from Oklahoma University.
