DePaul Men's Tennis Team Earns Four Wins on Day Two
EVANSTON, Ill. - The DePaul men's tennis team picked up an additional four wins today during day two of the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern. Two rounds of singles action filled the day's competition, played at both the Combe and Vandy Christie Tennis Centers.
Vanja Grgec and Alasdair Graetz each tallied a win during the first round of Flight B bracket play. Grgec advanced to the semifinals after defeating Thomas Wilson of Purdue, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Northwestern's Sidarth Balaji. After splitting the first two frames, the duo went to a tiebreaker set where Grgec was narrowly edged out of a spot in the finals by a score of 10-8. The senior returns to the court tomorrow where he joins Mathias Hambach in a doubles match-up against Alex Doherty and Austin Sansone of Ball State.
Graetz faced Leo Sarrio of Toledo and took the 'W' in straight sets (6-4, 6-3), before falling to Northwestern's Mark Schanerman, 6-4, 7-6. After receiving a first-round bye, Graetz and Jon Polanec enter the doubles court for the first time this weekend on Sunday morning to face Marquette's tandem of Otavio Perim and Drake Kakar.
In the A flight, both Bartosz Jozwiak and Ben Hartman lost in the first round of competition today. The Blue Demon duo team up to tangle with Sven Burus and Robbie McCallum on Sunday morning, while Jozwiak will take on Burus a second time in consolation singles play later in the day.
Matija Palinic bounced back from an early loss to Northwestern's Chris Jackman to take a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ryan Dullin of Drake. Tomorrow he will face Iowa's Mitch Beckert in consolation play. Also competing in Flight C singles, Douglas Perrin suffered two tough losses to both Beckert and Ball State's Shaun Bussert. Palinic and Perrin, who are also doubles partners this weekend, conclude the tournament tomorrow with a doubles match against Drake's James McKie and Mauricio Ballivian.
Hambach picked up the only win in Flight D today, defeating Bryant Dudzik of Toledo, 6-1, 6-2. He joins Toledo's Gursher Harika for a final singles match tomorrow morning. Polanec lost 6-1, 6-2 to Austin Sansone in the quarterfinals before suffering a two-set defeat against Harika.
The final day of the Wildcat Invitational begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. Two round of singles play follow a final round of doubles action. While bracket champions will be named in the four singles flights, the doubles flights will not be played out allowing competitors to advance only as far as the semifinals.
