Palinic, Polanec and Hambach Finish Day One of Midwest Regional
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- DePaul men's tennis players Jon Polanec, Mathias Hambach and Matija Palinic finished the first day of singles qualifying matches at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional on Thursday at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center. All three reached the second round while Hambach and Palinic move on and play on Friday.
Hambach dominated Green Bay's Paul Swanson 6-0, 6-3 in his first match. The freshman took three sets to knock out sixth seeded Jason Norville from Michigan State in the second round. Hambach recorded a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 victory over the Spartan.
Hambach moves onto the quarterfinals of the qualifying bracket and plays Illinois State's Skip Span at 8 a.m. (EST) on Friday.
Palinic also qualified for Friday's action with a pair of wins. In his first match, he topped IPFW's Eduardo Sztrajtman 7-6 (5), 6-0 while he overpowered Michael Basha from Western Michigan 6-2, 6-3. The sophomore is slated to tangle with Illinois State's Xavier Riart-Ferrer on Friday at 8 a.m.
Polanec's recieved a first round bye, but was unsuccessful in the second round as he dropped a three-set (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) heartbreaker to Michigan State's John Stratton to end his chance at qualifying for the main draw.
The singles main draw begins on Friday. Alasdair Graetz, Ben Hartman and Vanja Grgec play in the third match of the day while Bartosz Jozwiak has to wait for the fourth match. Detroit-Mercy's Pjotrs Necajevs awaits Graetz, while Hartman is slated to play a student-athlete who advances from the qualifying bracket.
A pair of Ohio State student-athletes awaits Grgec and Jozwiak in the first round. Grgec faces Steven Williams while Jozwiak will tangle with Devin McCarthy.
Doubles play gets underway on Friday with the Blue Demon pairs of Graetz and Polanec and Grgec and Hambach swinging into action. Seeded at No. 14 Hartman and Jozwiak received a first round bye and will wait to play until Saturday.
