Blue Demons Head to Columbus for Midwest Regional
Oct. 16, 2013
CHICAGO -- Last week, the DePaul women's tennis team posted a strong showing at the ITA Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich., sending one to the quarterfinals and one to the semifinals in the main singles draw.
Now, it is the men's turn in ITA Regional play.
The five-day ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by The Ohio State University, is scheduled to begin tomorrow (Oct. 17) in Columbus, Ohio.
DePaul will send six singles players and three doubles pairs to the regional tournament this week. Four of the six singles players will open in the qualifying draw, while the other two sit in the main draw. To qualify for the main singles draw, a competitor in the qualifying round must reach the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, only the main draw will take place this week; there is no qualifying round.
The four Blue Demons that will get the tournament started in the qualifying singles draw are Paul John, Tim Corwin, Adam Reinhart and Sten Leusink, who is the No. 15 seed in the draw. The four Blue Demons have combined to go 18-10 through the first three tournaments of the fall.
John will open against Green Bay's Joey Leto and Corwin will take on Jorg Van Der Vloet (Cleveland State), the No. 11 seed in the qualifying draw. Then, Reinhart will face Rowan Isaaks of Green Bay and the final first round matchup in the qualifying draw that will feature a Blue Demon is Leusink's match against Western Michigan's Pablo Mora.
If any of the four Blue Demons in the qualifying draw advance to the quarterfinals, they will join Filip Dzanko and David Vieyra in the main singles draw. Dzanko opens his tournament against Illinois State's Jacob Wilson, while Vieyra will play Northwestern's Konrad Zieba. Vieyra and Dzanko are a combined 10-5 this fall.
In the doubles draw, Leusink and Reinhart will face Michigan State's Drew Lied and John Patrick Mullane, the bracket's No. 9 seed. John will team with Corwin to play Ohio State's Hunter Callahan and Chris Diaz, the tournament's No. 7 seed.
Finally, Dzanko and Vieyra will pair up for the tournament. The Blue Demon duo is the tournament's No. 3 seed; they came into the 2013-14 season ranked No. 46 in the country. This fall, Dzanko and Vieyra are 6-1 in doubles play, including a Flight A doubles championship at the Purdue Invitational in September.
"The guys have been working really hard and we are expecting some good, competitive matches out there," DePaul Assistant Coach Artem Iliushin said. "We are also really excited to see the newcomers competing in their first regional as well. It will be nice to see."
All match times and locations will be announced later today on the official tournament page. Live scoring links will also be available on the tournament page later in the tournament.
The ITA Midwest Regional is DePaul's fourth tournament of the fall. The Blue Demons will play one more in Minnesota this November before breaking for the winter.
