Hartman Advances at the Midwest Regional
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - DePaul's Ben Hartman advanced at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center on Friday.
Hartman highlighted the Blue Demon's singles play with a heart stopping, three-set victory of Eastern Illinois' Jeff Rutherford. Hartman took the first set 6-2, but Rutherford evened the slate with a 6-4 set two win. A back-and-fourth third set resulted in Hartman winning the tiebreaker and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. Hartman is scheduled to play 14th-seeded Patrick Pohlmann from Wisconsin on Saturday.
In doubles action, Alasdair Graetz and Jon Polanec took an 8-6 match from Matt Clegg and Marko Storic from Green Bay. The pair is slated to face Moritz Baumann and Marek Michalicka -- the top-seeded duo from Wisconsin on Saturday.
As the No. 14 seed in the doubles bracket, Bartosz Jozwiak and Hartman received a first round bye and will play Jose Carlos Gutierrez and Mark Rutherford from Marquette.
Matija Palinic, Graetz and Jozwiak were not successful in their singles matches on Friday. The trio falls into the consolation bracket that will be played on Saturday.
