CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s tennis team begins the ITA Midwest Regional today at Notre Dame’s Ecks Tennis Center. The 60-person singles qualify brackets begin on Thursday, while the 61-team doubles bracket and the main draw begin on Friday.
The Blue Demons join schools from all over the Midwest – including Cleveland State, Detroit, Eastern Illinois, Green Bay, Illinois, Illinois State, IPFW, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, UIC, Valparaiso, Western Michigan Wisconsin and Youngstown State.
Mathias Hambach, Matija Palinic and Bartosz Jozwiak will play in the qualifying singles bracket for one of eight spots in the main singles draw. Jozwiak is scheduled to play Green Bay’s Erik Finkenbrink, while Palinic faces Ross Vanderploeg from Western Michigan. Hambach sees a familiar face in BIG EAST foe Thibault Troude from Marquette in his opening round match.
In the main draw, George Chanturia, who enters the Regional with a Blue Demon-best 5-1 singles record is scheduled to play Notre Dames’ Stephen Havens on his home court. Sven Kasper tangles with Filip Havens from Illinois State and Ben Hartman is tangles with Northwestern’s Tobias Reitz.
In the doubles bracket, Hambach and Hartman and Jozwiak and Kasper both square off with pairs from the University of Illinois. Hambach and Hartman face Dennis Nevolo and Abe Souza while Jozwiak and Kasper will see Stephen Hoh and Connor Roth in their opening round match. Palinic and Chanturia, who boast a perfect 4-0 record in doubles action this season, play the Western Michigan pair of Michael Calderone and Thomas Calderone.
Following the ITA Midwest Regional the men’s team closes out the fall portion of its schedule at Vredevelt Invitational, Oct. 29-31 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
