CHICAGO – DePaul head men’s tennis coach Matt Brothers announced on Wednesday that Kyle Johnson, Jr. and Sten Leusink have both signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Blue Demon program in the Fall of 2012.

“We couldn't be more pleased with the signing of Sten and Kyle to our 2012 recruiting class,” Brothers said.  “They both possess the skills, work ethic and passion that have helped to define and elevate our program over the past five years.  We look forward to welcoming them both into the DePaul Family.”

Johnson comes to DePaul from Charlotte, N.C. and was named the Charlotte Observer Tennis Player of the Year in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Johnson is the only freshman to ever win North Carolina’s 3A State Singles Championship.  Johnson then went on to repeat that feat as sophomore and then again as a junior to become just the seventh boys tennis player to win three state titles.

“Heart is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Kyle,” Brothers said of Johnson who is a four-star recruit on TennisRecuriting.net.

“I have had the pleasure of seeing him compete several times over the past year and know he is fully prepared to bleed DePaul Blue for our program.”

At the juniors level -- Johnson won six matches at the 2010 UNC Greensboro ITA tournament and was a semifinalist at the UNC Chapel Hill ITA in 2011. He has won multiple Southern Section Level 3 tournaments and in 2009 was a finalist at the Southern Section Designated Tournament.

“Kyle has an extremely supportive family behind him and possesses all of the skills necessary to be a high-level collegiate player.  We anticipate that his work ethic and passion for the game will be an inspiration for his Blue Demon teammates and that he will quickly evolve into a team leader,” Brothers added about the Charlotte Catholic High School standout.

Leusink comes to DePaul from Lijnden in the Netherlands and ranked as high as No. 9 when he was playing at the 15 and 16 and under juniors level.  Currently playing in Dutch men’s open tournaments, Leusink ranks in the top 140 and has several wins over players ranked in the top 100.

“Sten is an extremely talented player who we expect will make an immediate impact on the program,” Brothers said of the Netherlands native. “He is very goal driven and passionate about the game and knows his best tennis is still ahead of him.  Having attended the highest level of high school in the Netherlands, Sten is also a phenomenal student and will fit right in with our program's academic standards.

The 2011-12 edition of the DePaul men’s tennis team returns to the courts on January 14 when it hosts UIC and Detroit in a tennis doubleheader at the Lakeshore Athletic Club.  The first serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. against the Flames.  The dual with Detroit is set to begin at 6 p.m. on the corner on Lakewood and Fullerton.
