MILWAUKEE – The latest episode in this compelling basketball rivalry more than lived up to the advance billing Thursday night.

In front of a partisan crowd at the Al McGuire Center, DePaul’s slow start and off-target shooting cost the team in a 93-81 loss to Marquette.

Mart’e Grays led the Blue Demons with 19 points while Kelly Campbell turned in another complete performance with 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Amarah Coleman added 16 points and Chante Stonewall had 13 points and eight boards.

Allazia Blockton led Marquette (9-5, 3-0) with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Demons opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run and sliced a 14-point halftime deficit to 48-42. Millender and Chante Stonewall hit threes to spark the surge.

The Golden Eagles responded with a run of their own and pushed the lead back to 11 in the middle of the quarter. A Grays three-pointer made it a seven-point game until Marquette closed out the quarter with four unanswered points and a 66-55 lead.

Outscoring the Blue Demons 18-13 from the outset of the fourth quarter, Marquette moved in front 84-68 with 4:22 left in the game.

Marquette opened the game making its first five shots for a 10-0 lead. The home team maintained its hot shooting and moved out to a 28-13 advantage after one quarter. The Blue Demons shot 5-of-22 over the first 10 minutes.

DePaul’s offense began loosening up in the middle of the second quarter and coach Doug Bruno’s team drew within 37-25 with 4:23 to go before halftime.

The deficit was down to eight when the Golden Eagles closed out the first half on an 8-2 spurt for a 48-34 lead at the break.

The Blue Demons shot 33 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes while Marquette converted at a 51.4 percent clip. DePaul had just three baskets from beyond the arc.
