Big Second Half Propels DePaul Past Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Megan Rogowski and Brittany Hrynko combined to score 27 points in the second half which fueled the DePaul women’s basketball team’s 75-68 come-from-behind victory over Seton Hall on Tuesday at Walsh Gymnasium.

With the win, DePaul improves to 12-5 on the year and 3-2 in the BIG EAST Conference. Seton Hall falls to 10-5 and drops to 1-5 in league games.

Jasmine Penny reached the 20-point mark for the sixth consecutive game and led DePaul with 21 points. Hrynko, who had just three points at the half, finished with 16 and was 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Rogowski scored all 14 of her points in the second half and also knocked down three triples.

Penny, recorded her second career double-double and paced DePaul with 11 rebounds. Megan Podkowa finished with 11 boards while adding four points and an assist.

Chanise Jenkins commanded the offense and dished out seven of the Blue Demons 17 assists. Jessica January added four assists and grabbed four key rebounds.

It was a tale of two halves with the Blue Demons outscoring the Pirates 48-37 in the final 20 minutes. The Blue Demons shot just 28.6 percent in the first half, while they knocked down 53.6 percent including 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from behind the arc.

Down, 31-27 at the half, the Blue Demon used an 8-2 run to knot the game at 35 and took a 38-37 advantage on a Rogowski triple.

DePaul pushed its lead to six points – 47-41 when Brandi Harvey-Carr connected from under the hoop with 12:55 to play.

The pesky Pirates would not go away and used a 15-3 run and were up six (56-50) lead with 8:19 on the clock.

Hrynko scored eight of DePaul’s next 10 points, while her triple in front of the DePaul bench gave the Blue Demons the lead for good with just under six and a half minutes to play.

Ka-Deidre Simmons led Seton Hall with 21 points while Tabitha Richardson-Smith added 17.  Bra’Shey Ali led all players with 14 rebounds.

The Pirates came into Tuesday’s game with the league’s second-best rebounding average (47.4), however the Blue Demons won the battle on the glass by outrebounding SHU 47-41.   

DePaul returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Villanova in a BIG EAST contest at McGrath-Phillips Arena.  The Blue Demons and Wildcats tip at 2 p.m. while the game will be carried on Fox Sports 1 with former DePaul legend, Sarah Kustok calling the game.
