#12/17 DePaul Overpowers #8/8 West Virginia
Jan. 30, 2011
CHICAGO -- Keisha Hampton led all scorers with 16 points as the #12/17 DePaul women’s basketball team defeated #8/8 West Virginia, 78-55 in front of a sold out McGrath Arena crowd on Sunday.
DePaul (21-2, 8-0 BIG EAST) improves to 17-0 this season when scoring over 70 or more points and defeated its third, top 25 team this season (#3/2 Stanford, #18/18 St. John’s and #8/8 West Virginia) and second top 10 team at McGrath Arena.
The Blue Demons ran their BIG EAST record to 8-0 for the first time in school history, and became the first team in the conference to reach 21 wins.
DePaul head coach Doug Bruno’s squad trailed 4-0, before Sam Quigley ignited the team with a layup, which started a 16-0 run.
West Virginia (19-3, 5-3 BIG EAST) came into the game having a highly-touted defense, but it was coach Doug Bruno’s team that amassed 14 steals which helped lead to its double-digit victory.
“The challenge to my players was, why should West Virginia have the market on intensity?” Bruno said. “Our challenge was to match West Virginia’s defense in rebounding and toughness and we did that.”
Quigley and Anna Martin ran the court with proficiency with half-court passes to open teammates as the Blue Demons finished with 20 assists. The fast-paced offense kept the Mountaineers on their heels as DePaul became the first team this season to score 70 or more points against their defense.
Quigley once again sparked DePaul’s scoring outburst in the second half as her give-and-go to Chester resulted in the halves’ first points. Chester then scored the next two baskets before Hampton drained a 3-pointer and the Blue Demons had built a 43-28 advantage with 17:05 on the clock.
DePaul continued to run on all cylinders and took its first 20-point lead (48-28) on a Quigley jumper with 15:45 left to play.
The Blue Demons extended their lead to as many as 25 points – 78-53 with 1:31 remaining.
“DePaul kicked our butt,” said West Virginia head coach Mike Carey. “[DePaul] was just hungrier and wanted it more.”
DePaul also won the turnover battle by scoring 34-points off 24-West Virginia turnovers compared to just 13 turnovers by the Blue Demons.
“The shots were falling, which helped me with my confidence,” Pikes said. The junior finished 7-of-11 from the field while DePaul combined for 50 percent from the floor.
DePaul travels to Hartford on Feb. 5 to take on # 2/2 Connecticut at 1:00 p.m. (CST) for first place in the BIG EAST. UConn is currently 9-0 in league play.
“We’re excited to go to UConn,” Bruno added. “We’ll have our hands full, but we’ll put our best game out there.”
Saturday’s game will be carried live in Chicago on Lakeshore Public Television.
