Blue Demons Edge Xavier 73-72 on Sunday
Feb. 11, 2018
CINCINNATI – You can’t get any closer than this.
A potential tying three-pointer by Xavier’s Kindell Fincher was over-ruled after an officials review and DePaul came away with a 73-72 BIG EAST victory Sunday at the Cintas Center.
The review of Fincher’s step-back attempt showed her right toe was on the three-point arc.
A 7-0 run had given DePaul a 66-61 lead, and it was 69-66 when a Musketeer three tied a game that was close from the opening tip.
Mart’e Grays and Ashton Millender each scored 16 points to pace DePaul (20-6, 12-2). Amarah Coleman had 10 points and reached 1,000 points for her career. Campbell came close to a triple-double finishing with nine points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.
Once the smoke had cleared, it was time to appreciate a few more historic moments in the legacy of DePaul women’s basketball.
The Blue Demons’ victory over Xavier made it 11 seasons in a row that the program has won 20 or more games in a season.
Helping to make that possible was Coleman who became a 1,000-point scorer for her career including 225 points as a freshman at Illinois.
Less than 48 hours earlier, coach Doug Bruno had won No. 700 in his iconic Hall of Fame career.
After a hot-shooting Xavier (9-17, 2-13) outscored the visiting team 45-39 in the first half, DePaul was looking for a turnaround third quarter. It went back and forth with Xavier still holding a 52-50 lead at the media timeout. The home team was 10-for-14 from deep at that point. Xavier finished 12 of 22.
A Grays layup off a Campbell assist tied the game at 52-52 with 2:28 to go in the third quarter. Campbell’s feed to a streaking Coleman made it 54-54 after three quarters. At that point, Campbell had seven points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
Back-to-back baskets by Stonewall and Coleman put the Blue Demons in front 64-61 with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter.
With 6:03 left in the first quarter, Coleman stole the ball and drove for a layup that marked the 1,000th point in her career. Her team trailed 13-9 at the media timeout. Closing out the first quarter on a 7-0 run brought the Blue Demons within 27-19.
Another run to open the second quarter made it a one-point game. A Grays three-pointer followed by a layup off a nice feed from Lauren Prochaska gave DePaul its first lead at 38-37.
Xavier came back to finish the quarter with an 8-1 burst to take a 45-39 lead at halftime. The Musketeers made 9-of-12 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Grays and Stonewall each had eight points at the break while Campbell had seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.
DePaul returns to McGrath-Phillips Arena on Friday for a BIG EAST showdown against Georgetown.
