#10/11 DePaul Overpowers #18/18 Georgetown
Feb. 20, 2011
CHICAGO -- Sam Quigley led all scorers with 14 points, while Katherine Harry recorded her eighth career and third double-double of the as No. 10/11 DePaul overtook Georgetown 82-57 on Sunday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
DePaul (25-3, 12-1 BIG EAST) defeated its fifth, top 25 team this season (No. 3/2 Stanford, at No. 18/18 St. John’s, No. 8/8 West Virginia, No. 21/22 Marquette and No. 18/18 Georgetown), and remains in second place in the conference.
The Blue Demons have now won their 18th game-in-a-row at McGrath-Phillips Arena, and boast a program-best 25-3 record thru 28 games.
Before the game, Director of Athletics Jean Lenti Ponsetto and DePaul University President Father Dennis Holtschneider presented men’s basketball head coach Oliver Purnell a commemorative 400th career-win basketball. Blue Demon head coach Doug Bruno also received a basketball in honor of his 500th career win which DePaul recorded at Missouri State on Nov. 15.
The Blue Demons won the tip and began a familiar run this season with Anna Martin connecting on a 3-pointer. The Hoyas responded with a triple of their own, as both teams began trading baskets from downtown.
After a few turnovers from both sides, Georgetown coach Terri Williams-Flournoy’s team displayed a full-court press that seemed to throw the Blue Demon’s off pace which accounted for a 10-6 Hoya with 14:29 on the game clock.
The 7 - 0 Georgetown run ended when Harry drove to the hoop on a fast break pass from Quigley, a Nancy Lieberman top-point guard finalist, which started a 16-0 Blue Demon run that would last over the next six minutes.
As the fist half came to a close, DePaul led 37- 24, and coach Bruno’s squad was outrebounding Georgetown 22 to 10 and blocking shots. Harry ended the fist half by blocking a Morgan Williams attempt, which tied her with former Blue Demon Natasha Williams for eighth all-time.
At the half, Ponsetto and Fr. Holtschneider honored 1982 DePaul alumna Joni Phillips as the most generous benefactor in school history. In doing so, the new arena will be called McGrath-Phillips in her honor. Former women’s basketball players were also recognized in front of a sold out crowd.
The second half started with an even more intensive defensive effort from the Hoyas; however, Bruno’s squad found holes in the Georgetown passing lane and proved no match for either inside or outside game.
“DePaul is a very good team,” said coach Williams-Flourney. “They are well-balanced and can shoot the three.”
“We played a very good Georgetown team,” Bruno said. “They bring the heat, and fortunately our team was able to face up to it.”
DePaul travels to Louisville on Wednesday. The game tips at 6 p.m. (CST) and can be heard via DePaul’s BlueTube.
