CHICAGO – No. 21/18 DePaul’s three-game winning streak came to an end with an 81-65 loss to Syracuse on Tuesday in BIG EAST Conference action at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

Syracuse’s Carmen Tyson-Thomas came off the bench paced the floor with 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.  Rachel Coffey also scored 22 while Kayla Alexander added 17 and Elashier Hall had 15.

Anna Martin led DePaul with 18 points. Jasmine Penny chipped in 16 points and added nine rebounds and dished out a career-high five assists. Katherine Harry scored 11 points.

The fast-paced first half was all about runs.  DePaul shot 48 percent (14-of-29) while the Orange were 42 percent with five 3-pointers and went to the locker room up 37-36.  

With DePaul up 13-11, the Orange put together a 12-4 run and led 23-15 with 8:38 to play.  The Blue Demons answered with a 15-7 run which was fueled by pair of 3-pointers from Megan Rogowski while Martin and Penny both had big baskets during the run.

Tied at 30, DePaul got layups from Harry and Penny and led by four with 3:16 to play.  Syracuse closed out the half on a 7-4 run and took a one-point lead into the final 20 minutes.

The two teams traded baskets in the early portion of the final stanza and the Blue Demons took a 43-41 advantage on a Martin layup with 17:26 to play.

The Orange answered with a 23-0 run over the 7:57 and led 64-43 before a Harry layup ended DePaul’s draught with 8:40 to play in the half.

Not wanting to go down without a fight the Blue Demons put together a 14-5 over the next 4:12.  Martin, who scored six points during DePaul’s offensive output, completed the three-point-play which cut the deficit to 73-61 with just under two minutes to play.

Time ran out on DePaul’s comeback and the Blue Demon did not get closer than 12 the rest of the way.

DePaul shot 39 percent for the game, but was just 6-of-30 from behind the arc.   

The Blue Demons hit the road for a top 25 match-up at No. 16/17 Louisville on Saturday.  The BIG EAST Game of the Week tips at 11 a.m. (CT) while it can be seen on the BIG EAST Network.

Notes: The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for DePaul… Anna Martin led DePaul with 18 points... has led DePaul in scoring 16 times this season… Jasmine Penny scored 16 points... fell one rebound shy of her first double-double... also recorded a career-high five assists… DePaul has recorded a three-pointer in 87 consecutive games... the Blue Demons were 6-of-30 from behind the arc... fifth time this season and for the first time since Jan. 17 at USF that DePaul attempted 30 or more 3-pointers… DePaul outscored Syracuse in the paint 38-22… just the third time the Blue Demons have lost when at least three players score in double-figures... are now 18-3 when three players reach double-digits… the win is Syracuse’s second straight after dropping its previous two… in each of the Orange’s 17 wins, it has held its opponents to 70 points or less… Carmen Tyson-Thomas recorded her 18th career double-double and second in a row... had a game-high 22 points and 15 rebounds… Rachel Coffey posted a career-high 22 points... was her first career game with at least 20 points... her previous career-best was 15 points on Dec. 2, 2011 vs. Arizona… Tuesday was the seventh meeting between DePaul and Syracuse... the Blue Demons still lead the all-time series 5-2… the teams are now 2-2 when playing in Lincoln Park.
