QUEENS, N.Y. – The DePaul women’s basketball team could not overcome hot shooting by St. John's on its Senior Night and fell to the Red Storm, 67-54, on Monday at Carnesecca Arena.  

The Blue Demons finish the regular season 20-10 and 9-7 in BIG EAST Conference play. St. John’s improves to 17-11 and 11-5 in conference contests.

DePaul was paced by Jasmine Penny’s 14 points. Anna Martin and Brittany Hrynko each added 13 points.

St. John’s was led by senior Shenneika Smith’s 24 points and Amber Thompson came off the bench to score 20. The Red Storm shot 46 percent for the game which included a 58.6 clip in the second half.

DePaul jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the first 2:44, but St. John’s whittled away at the Blue Demon advantage and tied the game at seven with just under 15 minutes to play. The two teams traded baskets and a steal by Megan Rogowski led to a Hrynko layup and an 11-10 Blue Demon lead.

St. John’s used a 9-0 run and led 19-11 before Martin scored five unanswered points and cut the Red Strom lead to just three. DePaul pulled within one (21-20) on a Hrynko jumper with 3:33 to play.

St. John’s countered the DePaul attack with a 7-0 run to end the half and went to the locker room up 27-20. Hrynko led the Blue Demons with eight first-half points.

Smith and Thompson dominated the second half and combined to score 23 of St. John’s 40 second half points.

The Red Storm took their first double-digit lead (36-26) with 14:46 to play on Smith layup and pushed its lead to 16 (47-31) with 10:33.  

The Blue Demons’ full court pressure forced three St. John’s turnovers and DePaul pulled within nine – 53-44 on a Penny jumper. The teams traded baskets on the next four trips down the floor and the Blue Demons kept the Red Storm’s advantage in single digits.

St. John’s closed out the game on a 10-4 run.

DePaul has locked up a first round bye in the BIG EAST Championship which begins on Fri., March 8.  The Blue Demons play their first round game on Saturday while the BIG EAST bracket will be released later this evening.

Notes: Jasmine Penny has led DePaul in scoring the last two games… Katherine Harry finishes her career with 565 rebounds in BIG EAST Conference regular season games which ranks ninth all-time… Anna Martin has reached double-figures in each of her three games since returning to action after an eight game absence with a knee injury…  Megan Podkowa had four of DePaul’s six blocks…  DePaul was just 1-of-11 from behind the arc… DePaul tallied just eight assists… St. John’s held a 46-33 rebounding advantage…  DePaul still leads the all-time series 6-3… the St. John’s win halts a three-game series winning streak for the Blue Demons.
