MILWAUKEE - No. 17/17 DePaul made a determined comeback bid but fell short Tuesday night in the BIG EAST tournament championship game.

Natisha Hiedeman scored 28 points including six 3-pointers to lead Marquette to an 86-78 victory at the Al McGuire Center.

DePaul (26-7) was led by Jessica January with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Amarah Coleman scored 17 points, Brooke Schulte 11 and Chante Stonewall 10.

The Blue Demons trailed in the third quarter when Coleman scored seven unanswered points to give her team a 53-52 lead at the media timeout. The Golden Eagles restored a four-point lead when Chante Stonewall buried a three-pointer to bring DePaul within 59-58 going into a heated final 10 minutes.

Scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter sent Marquette to a 66-58 lead. The DePaul deficit grew to 10 before the Blue Demons chipped away. January hit a jumper and three-pointer in quick succession to make it 83-78, but that was the closest DePaul could get.

Marquette came out from the opening tip and hit six of its first 10 shots for an 18-14 lead at the first media timeout. The pace was break-neck up and down the court with both teams attacking the basket nonstop. Early scores by January and Grant kept the Blue Demons close.

Natisha Hiedeman ended the first quarter with a buzzer-beater just inside the half-court line to give Marquette a 25-24 lead after DePaul had gone on a 7-0 run.

Both teams were shooting 50 percent or better by the midpoint of the second quarter.  The Golden Eagles had built a 40-33 lead when Lauren Prochaska dropped a pair of free throws and Tanita Allen followed with a big three-pointer.

DePaul was down four when January hit a shot that bounced high off the top of the backboard and into the net for a 42-40 halftime deficit. January, who had not played against Marquette this season because of an injury, had 12 points and four assists at the break.
