CHICAGO - DePaul sophomore Brittany Hrynko led DePaul with 19 points and 14 assists as the Blue Demons topped Saint Xavier, 91-59 in exhibition action at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Tuesday.
DePaul showed why it is one of the best assists teams in the country as it totaled 26 on the evening with five different players registering at least one.
With the Blue Demons distributing the ball well, four players finished in double-figures. To go along with Hyrnko's 19, Jasmine Penny, Megan Rogowski, and Kelsey Reynolds finished with 16 points apiece.
Using a balanced attack, every eligible Blue Demon finished with no less than a basket each while Megan Podkowa, Rogowski, Penny, Reynolds and Hrynko all had two or more assists..
DePaul set the tempo early and took its first double-digit advantage (16-5) when Reynolds found an open Katherine Harry in the paint with 14:47 to play in the half. The Blue Demons continued to find the open player and combined for 13 assists in the opening 20 minutes.
Reynolds was on the receiving end of pass when Hrynko found her behind the arc to give DePaul a 36-16 advantage with 5:11 to play in the opening stanza. The Blue Demons went to the locker room up 47-26 behind 12 points and seven first-half assists from Hrynko.
In the second, DePaul would not relent against the visiting Cougars. After two free throws by SXU's Suzie Broski that pulled her squad to within 17, Hrynko sunk a 3-pointer at the 17:12 mark of the second half to give the Blue Demons a 52-32, 20-point lead. From that point forward, DePaul led by at least that margin.
A 13-rebound effort from Harry along with a 6-of-7 shooting effort (4-of-5 from the line) from Penny helped keep the game out of the Cougars' reach. DePaul's defensive prowess was evident in the contest as well, holding Saint Xavier to just 36-percent shooting from the field. The Blue Demons also finished with 20 second-chance points compared to just three by the Cougars.
DePaul plays its final exhibition game against Illinois Wesleyan at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The women's game is part of a men's/women's doubleheader with the men playing Lewis at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for both games are available at the DePaul Ticket Office (2323 Sheffield Ave.) or at any Ticketmaster location.
