CHICAGO – Jasmine Penny notched her first career double-double to lead No. 25 DePaul women’s basketball past visiting Illinois State, 80-67, on Monday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

Penny, a senior forward, was her usual efficient self around the rim, connecting on 8-of-12 from the field to finish with a game-high 21 points and adding 10 rebounds.

DePaul improves to 3-0 overall and has now won seven-straight over Illinois State, which dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Three other Blue Demons joined Penny in double figures as junior guard Brittany Hrynko added 16 points to go with eight assists. Freshmen Brandi Harvey-Carr (14 points) and Jessica January (12 points) also went for career-highs off the bench.

The Blue Demons out-rebounded ISU by a narrow margin, 38-37, but were not effective inside early, getting out-rebounded 20-13 in the opening half, en route to just a four-point lead at the break.

It didn't matter much as the Blue Demons got off to a 12-4 lead early and led 21-9 after a pair of January free throws just 7:56 into the game.

The Redbirds responded, however, with an 8-1 run over the next two minutes to get within five, 22-17, before DePaul reclaimed a commanding lead at 30-17 following a layup by Hrynko and a three-pointer by Centrese McGee.

ISU would not go away, getting back to within 39-37 on a triple by Mackenzie Freeman. DePaul would get its four-point lead at the break behind a half-ending layup by Hrynko.

A 6-0 run began the second half for the Blue Demons, leading to an ISU timeout at 18:19. DePaul would hold the Redbirds scoreless for the first 3:36 of the half.

Leading 51-42 four minutes later, DePaul launched another 8-0 spurt capped by a Harvey-Carr bucket that gave the Blue Demons their biggest lead of the game at 59-42. The Redbirds would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way as Penny put the game away with four straight points.

Next up for the Blue Demons is a meeting with Notre Dame on Tuesday, Nov. 26 in South Bend, Ind. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
