St. Thomas, USVI – Brittany Hrynko scored 18 points and led DePaul to a 60-58 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday at the University of the Virgin Islands Sport and Fitness Center.  The contest was game one of the Paradise Jam for the Blue Demons, who will face Hampton on Friday.

Hrynko paced three Blue Demons (4-1) in double-figures with Chanise Jenkins recording a career-best 12 points and Jasmine Penny chipping in 11.  Hrynko and Jenkins each added three assists apiece while Jenkins also recorded four key steals.

Katherine Harry paced DePaul on the glass for the fifth time this season and grabbed 12 rebounds.  She also added three blocks and three steals.

Florida Gulf Coast (2-2) was led by Betsy Adam’s 21 points which came on 7-of-19 shooting which included five 3-pointers.  Sarah Hansen added 11 points for the Eagles, who have lost their last two games.

DePaul got off to a fast start and raced out to an early 12-point lead with seven different players scoring in the opening 10:18 of action.

Up, 23-11 after a Megan Rogowski 3-pointer, DePaul went scoreless for the next 5:22.  Capitalizing on the Blue Demon scoring draught, FGCU scored 11 unanswered points.  Not wanting to relinquish the lead, Harry hit a five-foot jumper to put DePaul back up by three.  DePaul went to the locker room with a slim, 35-34 advantage.

FGCU took its first lead of the game on an Adams’ layup to open the second half.  The two teams traded baskets before a steal and layup by Jenkins gave DePaul the lead for good, 39-38 with 17:50 to play.

DePaul extended its lead to nine points – 53-44 -- on a Penny layup but the pesky Eagles would not go away and used a quick 7-0 run to pull within in two with 3:53 to play.

FGCU would make it interesting in the final 28 seconds, by making two quick layups, but the Blue Demons held on take the Thanksgiving Day game.

DePaul returns to the court on Friday and plays Hampton, who lost to South Carolina 45-34 earlier today.
