No. 21 DePaul Falls in Overtime
Nov. 23, 2017
LAS VEGAS – What happens when one team (No. 21 DePaul) averaging nearly 99 points a game meets up with another team (Florida Gulf Coast) giving up less than 58 points a game?
Fans at the Mandalay Bay Events Center found out on Thursday when the Blue Demons fell 89-84 in overtime.
DePaul (3-2) moves into Friday’s consolation round to face the loser of No. 9.8 Ohio State and Memphis.
Mart'e Grays led six players in double figures with 17 points and nine rebounds. Chante Stonewall had 15 points and three blocks off the bench while Amarah Coleman finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Tanita Allen recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Kelly Campbell and Ashton Millender each scored 10 points.
Trailing throughout the fourth quarter, the Blue Demons rallied in crunch time. Stonewall hit a huge three-pointer with 1:47 left to tie it at 73-73. That’s how it remained heading into overtime.
Florida Gulf Coast (6-0) outscored DePaul 16-11 in the extra period. The Blue Demons were down 85-81 when Stonewall stepped up with another clutch three to make it 85-84 with 6.3 seconds left. FGCU closed it down with free throws.
The Blue Demons started slowly in the third quarter, but came back to lead 44-41 at the media timeout. FGCU came back to outscore DePaul 28-19 in the quarter to lead 58-52 heading into the final 10 minutes.
DePaul got off to a sluggish start, missing shots and failing to take advantage of pass-and-cut opportunities. Florida Gulf Coast went ahead 18-6 before a Blue Demon spurt closed the gap to 18-13.
FGCU entered the second quarter with a 20-13 lead, but Grays had an answer for that. The 6-foot, 2-inch junior scored 13 points in her nine-minute stint while lifting her team to a 33-30 lead at halftime. She did most of her scoring inside.
Grays made all five of her shots in the quarter, including a three-pointer, and added a pair of free throws for 15 first-half points. Coleman had six points and four rebounds at the break and Stonewall four points and two blocks.
