DePaul Falls to No. 1/1 Connecticut
Dec. 8, 2017
CHICAGO - A big reason why student-athletes are attracted to DePaul is the chance to play against the nation's elite.
That very opportunity surfaced on Friday night when the Blue Demons fell to No. 1/1 Connecticut 103-69 at Wintrust Arena.
Coach Doug Bruno reprised his strategy from two years ago using a hockey line-change format, substituting five players at a time to keep his team fresh.
In 2015, the Blue Demons faced a UConn team that came into McGrath-Phillips Arena with averaging 40 points per win. DePaul matched them shot for shot and trailed by just four at halftime. The game stayed close until a fourth-quarter Huskie run provided a 16-point win.
On Friday, the Blue Demons led by two points early in the game on a Coleman three. It was UConn 17-12 at the media timeout.
Connecticut went on one of its patented runs, outscoring the home team 13-2. The Blue Demons were down 33-20 after one quarter.
DePaul trailed by 19 midway through the second quarter when an Allen three-pointer and a Coleman foul shot cut into the deficit. Another Huskie run left the Blue Demons down 61-38 at halftime.
UConn built a 75-42 advantage by the middle of the third quarter and went into the final 10 minutes leading 82-47.
DePaul is back in action Wednesday when the Blue Demons head up to Evanston for a 7 p.m. game against rival Northwestern.
