CHICAGO - DePaul women's basketball had No. 5/6 Kentucky on its heels all night, but came up just short late in a 96-85 loss on Thursday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Four Blue Demons reached double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Brittany Hrynko and her game-high 20 points. Junior Megan Rogowski added 19 points, while sophomore Megan Podkowa and senior Jasmine Penny each chipped in with 17 apiece.
Kentucky improved to 10-0 and managed to prevail in its first-ever visit to Lincoln Park -- a place that has been historically unkind to visitors ranked inside the Top 25. DePaul dropped to 4-3 on the season with the loss and is now 7-3 against ranked opponents at home since the 2010-11 season.
The Blue Demons shot 57 percent and led by as many as 11 in the opening frame, never trailing after giving up a UK three-pointer in the opening seconds.
Down after a quick bucket, Podkowa answered with a triple to help spur an 11-3 Blue Demon run. Minutes later, leading at 18-10, another Podkowa three-pointer put DePaul up by a game-high 11 points at the 13:45 mark.
Kentucky would respond, however, getting back to within five, 44-39, with less than a minute left in the half. As part of a 9-2 spurt, UK closed the half with five more points to even things up at 44 going into the break.
DePaul scored the first five points out of halftime and continued to cling to a tight lead until the Wildcats claimed their first lead, 50-49, since the game's first 18 seconds just 2:30 into the second frame.
DePaul responded with a 7-2 run capped by a Rogowski lay-in, but a 14-5 UK run put the Blue Demons down five, 66-61, at a media timeout with 11:51 to play.
A bout of cold shooting by DePaul followed and helped the Wildcats build a 9-0 run, growing their lead to 85-73 with 3:47 to play. UK built its lead to a game-high 13 with just 2:12 left on the clock and closed it out with seven free throws in the game's final minute.
The Blue Demons return to action on Monday, December 16 in a home matchup with Dartmouth. Tip is set for 12: 00 p.m. CT at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
